D5 ADVANCED BIOFUEL is a type of renewable fuel that can be used to generate renewable identification numbers (RINs) for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). To qualify for D5 RINs, a fuel must meet the following criteria:
- Be an advanced biofuel
- Have a 50% emissions reduction percentage
- Have RINs that are validated by a qualified assurance plan (QAP)
D5 RINs can be generated from a variety of feed materials, including sugarcane ethanol, biogas, and renewable heating oil.
The EPA's Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program allows producers to use three models to measure the carbon intensity of their products. These models include CORSIA, Argonne's GREET, and a similar model used by the EPA
